WHAT:
For almost 70 years, the Williams family has resided in the same home in the Richmond Heights neighborhood, but in 2017 damage caused to their roof by Hurricane Irma threatened to end this multi-generational homestead.
This Wednesday, June 30, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 6 City Commissioner Bakari F. Burns and Rebuilding Together of Central Florida will paint the home’s exterior and put the final touches on a rehabilitation project to repair the home following the hurricane damage. Thanks to the rehabilitation, these investments will help ensure the home stays with the Williams family and can be passed on to future generations.
In addition to exterior painting, the rehabilitation project included the installation of a new roof provided by Rebuilding Together of Central Florida’s “Raise the Roof” program, funded by the City of Orlando through federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. Additionally, Rebuilding Together of Central Florida is raising philanthropic funds and seeking help from licensed contractors to repair some interior damage to the Williams’ home as a result of the original roof damage.
The partnership with Rebuilding Together of Central Florida advances the city’s priority that every resident has access to quality housing that is safe and affordable. In addition to building new housing, an equally important part of the city’s housing strategy is to rehabilitate existing residential units – like the home owned and occupied by the Williams family – so residents are able to remain in their homes.
Rebuilding Together of Central Florida repairs homes for neighbors in need of health and safety modifications at no cost to the homeowners.
